George Crowder and Walter Mitts leased a 25' x 140' section of the basement of the Lawer building in February 1917.
They ordered two bowling alleys, billiard, pool and card tables along with tobaccos and confectionery and the amusement place was operational by March 1917. In October 1917, Mr. Crowder dissolves the partnership and Mr. Mitts continues running the alleys. In April 1919, Walter Mitts starts a free employment service in the bowling alley (which appear to be dead). In July 1919, William Mitts is charged with conducting a gambling game, along with Fred Benson, in the H C Lawer building and both plead guilty. H C Lawer is also charged as proprietor of the building and pleads not guilty. Based on Riverton's Occupation Tax meetings during September 1919 I believe this location might have installed boxball alleys. In June 1921, Walter Mitts and H C Lawer were in Judge Brown's court in Lander for bootlegging and the place of business was ordered to close for a period of one year. In December 1921, Chas. Slater purchased the pool hall and bowling alley equipment belonging to Walter Mitts and opened the business after Judge Brown received an application to approve the sale. No mention of bowling after 1921 in the Riverton newspapers. |
